Challenge

To show that Irish design is world class, by taking viewers on a journey of discovery of design talent, looking at every aspect of design from small handmade objects to award-winning architecture and urban design. The series aims to show the high standard of Irish design; its influences nationally and internationally; and how many craftspeople continue to be inspired by natural materials.

Impact

The TV series elicited a tremendous response and positive Twitter feedback (@DesignEire). Among the most popular discoveries were Joe Hogan, the extraordinary basket weaver; Joseph Walsh’s stunning contemporary furniture; and the international success story of Irish architects in London, Milan and beyond.

Series-makers Angela Brady and Sandra O’Connell are well-known champions of Irish design and architecture through a series of initiatives, exhibitions, videos, educational and outreach projects and TV programmes over the past 15 years in Ireland and the UK. They have a passion for architecture, craft and design and have collaborated in their work with both the RIAI and RIBA. Designing Ireland was produced for RTÉ One by Newgrange Pictures and supported by BAI, RTÉ, RIAI, Irish Design 2015 (ID2015) and the Department of Arts, Heritage and The Gaeltacht.
